The Veterinary Technician is a focal point for all dogs and especially those needing care. Responsibilities range from traveling to all camps (AIE 4 glacier camps GR 1 ground location) and participating in hands-on inspection of sled dogs and dog yards. Vet Techs will ensure all injuries and illnesses are diagnosed and treated expeditiously. Vet techs will ensure the BCS of each dog is at company standard for tours. Techs will provide educational material and participate in camp meetings to relay Standard of Care protocols, Dogs First training, Musher Reporting, Vet Box Contents, Proactive training for females in heat and general care as needed.

Alaska Icefield Expeditions and her sister company Gold Rush Dog Tours are each hiring a vet tech for the season. The two vet techs will work as a team to do camp visits, care for dogs as needed off of various campsites and provide for each other's day off so continuity of care for the dogs is not interrupted.

Gold Rush Sled Dogs, LLC. Veterinary Technician position duties are as stated below:

  • Veterinary Technician will maintain vet box inventory in all camps and vet locations Including ordering and stocking needed Veterinary supplies.
  • Vet Tech will follow the dogs care and work directly with the Vet communicating all progress to the Camp Manager/Musher and Management.
  • Vet Techs will go to glacier camps and Summer Camp on a regular basis. This is a weekly assignment as weather allows. They will visit each dog yard and provide comments and communication to the Camp Manager/ Management/ and Company Veterinarian for each visit. Communications include health and wellbeing of the individual dogs specifically along with their treatment plans and who is assigned the care . They will also comment on precautions in place for females in heat, dog houses, level yards, any dogs with a low BCS. Photos will be included in all reports.
  • The Veterinary Technician will evaluate and address any concerns brought to attention by the camp manager.
    • Musher(s) will report each issue or concern to the Camp Manager and if said concern is deemed necessary for consultation, the Veterinary Technician will then be called upon to make further evaluation and obtain treatment plan in conjunction with the company vet. They will communicate the plan verbally and in writing to camp.
  • Veterinary Technician will then assist with properly diagnosing the issue of said dog(s) and give further evaluation to each situation.
    • Evaluations will result in either in-house treatment at camp, given by responsible musher, or potentially seeking Veterinary medicine in town
    • Inspect dogs on a regular basis, and no less than weekly, for BCS, injury, illness
    • Work closely with company vet to determine treatment plans
    • Maintain Dogs First Logs for dogs with injury, illness, puppies.
    • Review and follow up on Weekly Musher Reports
    • Provide daily emails to management and to company vet
    • Travel with dogs if care not available locally is required
    • Treat/ walk/ supervise dog care of all dogs not being cared for in the dog yards.
    • Exercise their full and complete knowledge to ensure the best care is provided.
    • Vet Techs work closely with the Company Vet on all diagnosis and instructions. They are support for the Vets monthly visit ensuring Dogs First reporting is maintained as well as support for the vet in all aspects of care.

We are focused on a high level of medical care for our sled dogs at our glacial dogsled camps. You'll have what it takes for this position if you excel at diagnosing illnesses, dog behavior, communication, and organizational skills, combined with compassion, attentiveness, and resiliency. You'll also make a great fit for this opportunity if you are a third year Vet Tech from an accredited program. CPR and First Aid are required, applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis and passing random drug testing including Marijuana.

This job position includes provided housing and meals while in camp. We also include an end of season bonus for those who complete the entirety of the season beginning in the third week of April through the end of September. Room provided as well as meals while in camp.
