Job Summary

The Prospect Researcher conducts in-depth and confidential prospect research on individuals, corporations and foundations for portfolios of assigned Colleges/Schools/Units. Research includes collection, interpretation, analysis and documentation of data on prospective donors and other constituent groups.
  • Researches, collects, and synthesizes large amounts of information based on fundraising need. Identifies researches and analyzes information to create profiles, bios and research profiles on current donors, prospects, alumni, parents and friends of FIU for future major and principal gift cultivation and solicitation.
  • Utilizes various database and online resources in the systematic and consistent approach to gathering accurate and substantial data for the fundraising process. Discusses resources needs with Development Officers and/or Advancement leadership. Asks questions to gain clarity on profile requests and works with assigned units and/or Development Officers to ensure that information provided was useful.
  • Manages a research request queue and responds to a variety of requests, from writing a quick event bio to drafting a full prospect profile. Negotiates the profile or report format and timeframe for proper deliverable. Manages sensitive information in donor records and files. Collects and analyzes data to ensure that relevant information is available and disseminated to the appropriate party.
  • Provides ongoing prospect pipeline analysis. Builds, evaluates, maintains and rates a qualified pool of prospects using wealth screening data and sophisticated research tools. May be required to manage a database conversion implementation for confidentiality and accuracy in all data.
  • Evaluates financial assets and all researched and known liabilities to estimate prospect capacity ratings through financial statement or other document analysis.
  • Collaborates with Advancement leadership and Prospect Management to specify how research contributes to, or supports, fundraising strategies and objectives for annual fund, planned giving, major and principal gifts and corporate and foundation relations. Works with Development Officers for bios, profiles and/or additional documentation for their individual portfolio work. Meets with assigned Officers on a regular basis to stay abreast of strategy, activities, upcoming meetings, and/or other matters through the discovery, cultivation and solicitation phases. Participates in all assigned team prospect portfolio review and strategy sessions. Develops and evaluates portfolios on current donors and future prospects, highlights pertinent information and makes recommendations.
  • Protects the privacy and confidentiality of information and files in his/her possession consistent with federal and state laws, and Board of Trustees and University policy. All prospect research collection follows the professional standards outlined by the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement.
  • Recommends specific tasks and procedures to improve the overall operation of prospect research and management programs. Interprets and administers established procedures related to the prospect research and prospect management program.
  • Maintains awareness of and consults with development officers as appropriate on advances in development, prospect research, higher education, local, regional, national and international business news and events, and in development affecting the development officer's fundraising area and university-wide initiatives.
  • Participates in systematic and skill-based trainings to increase knowledge base and enhance overall performance and service delivery.
  • Participates in and/or completes special projects at the request of the Director of Research and Prospect Management.
  • Stays abreast of all strategic fundraising activity on campus and major fundraising initiatives of the FIU Foundation. Executes a proactive research routine, utilizing methods much as daily news screens, reviewing push technology alerts, and combing donor lists to identify members with major gift capacity. Instructs Development staff and others on the methodology and resources of prospect research.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of research or relevant experience; OR six (6) years of research or relevant experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working with front-line fundraisers to evaluate moves management
  • Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts in written or presentation format and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus.
  • Expertise in prospect research and management, development and/or fundraising.
  • Familiarity with relational databases (Raiser's Edge), word processing (Microsoft Office/Word), spreadsheets (Excel) and experience with online databases such as Lexis-Nexis. Proficiency with building complex data queries, segmentation, and visualization. Fluency in CRM systems
