Description
This is a full-time, nine-month (March to November), serving as the Captain of the 65-foot, steel-hulled research vessel, William Scandling. This vessel is used primarily in support of the Colleges' teaching mission, but it is documented as a research vessel by the U.S. Coast Guard. Hobart and William Smith Colleges are part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS).
Most of this person's time is spent on-board ship. The William Scandling normally works at the north end of Seneca Lake. On occasion, it is called upon to cruise the length of Seneca Lake and to work on Cayuga Lake, the NYS Barge Canal, or the lower Great Lakes in support of research or instruction carried out by Colleges' personnel or activities carried out by people contracting for the vessel's use. The William Scandling is berthed on the east side of the Seneca-Cayuga Branch of the NYS Barge Canal, at the Stiver's Seneca Marine, Seneca County, NY.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Captain of the William Scandling will operate and maintain the vessel as it is used to carry out the Colleges' mission of teaching and research. Specifically, the Captain will, working with the ship's General Hand:
This is a full-time, 9-month (March through November), benefits-eligible administrative salaried position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Salary is $55,341.
Qualifications
Three to five years of professional experience operating a vessel of greater than 58 tons displacement and capable of carrying 25 persons. Hold an Operator’s/Captain’s license or is in the process of obtaining same. Diesel mechanic training/experience, preferably on marine engines. Experience in operating and maintaining outboard gasoline engines. Experience in operating hydraulic cranes or winches. Experience with research or academic programs.
