Career Counselor



This position reports under two units Experiential Learning and Professional Engagement Office(COOP/Internships & Global Experiences). The Global and Experiential Programs Manager’s primary focus is to manage and help grow domestic and global Co-ops and internships, and global research opportunities for the Swanson School of Engineering (SSOE). This position serves as the central advisor for global Co-ops, internships, and research opportunities and is the point of contact for students from 1-2 engineering departments/majors for domestic Co-op and internship opportunities. The incumbent will work with students through all stages of professional development (applications, resume review, portfolio creation, interviews, etc.). The incumbent will work with other Office of Experiential Learning & Professional Engagement (ELPE) staff and others in designing student programming events. The employee manages and helps to create new domestic and global Co-ops and internships as well as global research opportunities while maintaining strong relationships with current partners through cold calling, partner/job development, alumni outreach, site visits, and industry research. The position requires knowledge of the SSOE majors and program offerings, as well as staying abreast of industry trends and country specific rules and requirements. The incumbent works closely with global and domestic industry representatives and partners to post opportunities, create interview opportunities as needed, forward resumes/portfolios/applications as appropriate, and keep track of offers and acceptances. This role must also create and foster existing partnerships across SSOE, (Undergraduate Program Coordinators and Administrators, Student Services, Student Records, etc.), the University (Pitt GEO, UCIS, OAFA, Registrar, etc.), alumni and with external employers, partners, and universities. Additional student outreach includes newsletters, email, social media, student organization listservs to advertise department services and professional development opportunities.Bachelor's Degree Required, Master’s Degree preferred.2-3 years’ professional experience working with employers and/or organizations; experience developing and managing internship or global programs preferred; previous personal study abroad experience and/or living abroad preferred.


Job Summary

Provides group and individual student career coaching and assessments to foster understanding of University resources, professional development, and career opportunities. Assists in creation and facilitation of education and outreach. Teaches career development courses. Promotes and represents the career center at University functions and drives outreach.

Physical Effort

This position is generally sedentary. However, the ability to travel domestically or internationally, with students, is required.
