The Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Department of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is recruiting a physician investigator on the tenure track to serve as the Division Director. The ideal candidate for this position would be a pediatrician or family medicine physician who is board-certified in Adolescent Medicine with an independent scientific record in adolescent and young adult health research.

The Division: The director will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers whose expertise span adolescent and young adult medicine, social epidemiology, pediatrics, internal medicine, and anthropology. The vision of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine is that all youth are healthy and thriving. The Division’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of all youth. We achieve this mission through conducting innovative, community-partnered research, providing accessible and equitable healthcare services for adolescents in the context of their family, culture, and community, and offering interdisciplinary adolescent healthcare education for health professional trainees and practitioners. Our Division faculty hold multiple federal and foundation grants, with programs to understand inequities in adolescent health, promote adolescent health equity, and improve adolescent health outcomes. We are committed to engaging with youth in their communities as their allies and advocates, and we partner with experts in the community to reach these goals. Division faculty lead institutional initiatives in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Faculty specialize in violence prevention, mental health, substance use disorder prevention and treatment, sexual and reproductive health, LGBT health, gender-affirming care, obesity prevention, and management, eating disorders, college health, services for youth experiencing marginalization (e.g., youth who are unhoused, system-involved), community health (including mobile services), telemedicine, and transition care. Areas of potential interest to the Division’s growing program include optimizing transitions to adult care, substance use prevention and intervention, young adult health (including college health), and school-based health services.

The Division is home to the Center for Adolescent and Young Adult Health, an integrated behavioral and medical clinic specializing in care for adolescents up to age 26. Satellite clinics and community-based services include clinical care for system-involved youth (child welfare and juvenile courts), care for youth who are homeless and unstably housed, adolescent specialty services embedded in community pediatric practices, telemedicine services to regional college campuses, and a mobile van providing clinical services to communities made vulnerable by systemic racism and structural inequities. The Division Director is responsible for budgetary planning, credentialing, and compliance for all physicians affiliated with the division, identifying business opportunities that enhance the mission of the division and hospital, supporting the career development of all division faculty, and ensuring that the fellowship program and clinical services are implemented successfully in collaboration with the Fellowship Program Director and Clinical Director, respectively.

The Division Director will serve as the overall Scientific Director for the Division and is expected to conduct cutting-edge, collaborative team science both independently as well as in conjunction with other investigators at the University of Pittsburgh. This includes growing interdisciplinary training and mentoring programs (including the existing Adolescent Medicine fellowship program) in collaboration with the Fellowship Program Director and other faculty. The director is also responsible for the career development of all members of the faculty.
