Job Summary

The Book Arts Program at the J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah seeks a professional to join an active arts education program. This position will provide administrative support for faculty and coordinate with other team members to plan and coordinate programming that meets the needs of students, studio users, and the broader community.

The Book Arts Studio Support & Outreach Education Specialist will contribute to the communication, scheduling, and planning efforts for all Book Arts programming, including academic support and coordination and delivery of K-12 and adult community outreach initiatives. The position will teach book arts in Utah high school classrooms and other venues, inventory and order supplies, respond to requests regarding teaching and outreach sessions, maintain address and registration lists, assist in preparation for teaching activities, and contribute to programmatic reporting and assessment. This role requires significant attention to detail and substantial independent focus. The individual in this position will travel to Utah schools and other venues in addition to working on campus, and must have a valid Utah driver's license. The Marriott Library van can be reserved or travel in a personal vehicle will be reimbursed.

This position is currently designed as a hybrid of on-campus and remote work. Specific telecommuting arrangements will be based on the needs of the position and authorized at the discretion of the supervisor.

Responsibilities

The Book Arts Studio Support & Outreach Specialist will:
  • Act as primary instructor for grades 9-12 outreach programming (approximately 40% of effort)
  • Provide support to the full-time team members across the full breadth of the Book Arts Program, including academic and adult community programming as well as responding to other programmatic needs such as scheduling meetings as needed, coordinating sessions in response to external requests, replying to general queries, ordering supplies, providing logistical and shipping support for instructional programming, preparing teaching materials, acting as studio monitor during open studio, and potentially supervising part-time employees and/or interns (approx. 35% of effort)
  • Contribute to K-12 curriculum development and maintenance (approx. 10% of effort)
  • Act as teaching assistant and/or co-instructor for academic sessions provided to university students and other campus based groups (approx. 10% of effort)
  • Support assessment of academic and outreach programming (approx. 5% of effort)
  • Complete other duties as assigned, within the scope of the position
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Preferences
  • Strong preference for bachelor's degree in art or education or comparable
  • Two or more years of teaching experience
  • Strong handskills/exacting craft
  • Letterpress printing and bookmaking experience
  • Knowledge of and experience with any of the following: arts, book arts, book history, and/or related crafts and trades
  • Preference for graphic design/experience with Adobe Creative Cloud and familiarity with Excel
